Raleigh was fully prepared to say No when Headmaster Pentecost came knocking on his door in an immaculate muggle suit asking him to come back to the Order of the Phoenix. He was done fighting wars and suffering at the hands of Death Eaters. He had the almost seizure-like episodes and scars to prove he'd done his time, paid more than the due price with his body, mind--and his brother, who had paid the ultimate price.
Pentecost doesn't ask immediately. He starts filling in the blanks Raleigh's been left with the muggle news papers, what's been magical crimes and what hasn't. He talks idly about the strange occurrences at the school since Raleigh left, and chit chats about the lives of the Order members Raleigh had been close to.
"I need you back. Mako Mori and Chuck Hansen has a task to complete that is vital to the war, but they're young, angry, and freshly graduated. I need someone experienced with them."
In other words, he needs someone to stand between them and the Death Eaters, to take the brunt of whatever the hell they were going to face completing this task of theirs. He remembers Chuck Hansen. An Australian transplant like he and Yancy were American ones. He'd ended up working with his dad in the Order once or twice. Eager little kid in first year, Yancy had pegged him as Quidditch captain material from day one, even when he didn't quite make the team because of his inexperience. And Mako Mori had been one of Tendo's chess clubbers, giving upper years kids runs for their money right from the beginning.
It's because of those first years that Raleigh finds himself outside the manor Cherno Alpha, everything he owns in an expanded duffle bag. He slips in, quietly, greeting Aleksis, Sasha, and Hercules Hansen as he goes in. Beyond them, though, he keeps his head down and hides himself in a corner of the big sitting room where the meeting and assignments are supposed to take place.
