welcome to kodiak island.

The Pan Pacific Defense Corps is an organization set up to battle the Kaiju threat through the use of Jaegers. Founded in 2014, the Corps represents an international alliance of 21 nations across the Pacific Rim, bound together by the shared goal of containing, combating and eliminating the Kaiju threat and save humanity from extinction.

In 2014, after the first Kaiju attack on San Francisco, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was created with the purpose of defending the various countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean that would be under attack from the Kaiju. Soon after, the headquarters of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps was established in Hong Kong, China, this being the first Shatterdome. After Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld pitched the idea of creating giant mechs to battle the kaiju, the Corps were formed to fund the Jaeger Program.

Welcome to Kodiak Island. For the next 24 weeks you'll have the chance to prove that you've got what it takes to be among the few who can pilot a Jaeger. We need capable pilots, so if you don't think you can hack it, better drop out now. The course will follow the following format, so listen up, you have: 1) OFFICER TRAINING: You will be studying tactics, some engineering, basic kaiju science, etc. Study good and study hard and if you're lucky enough to make the cut, we'll be shipping your sorry asses on to — 2) PONS TRAINING: There is a mock-pod simulator where you will learn how to drift with your chosen partner. Can't find a partner? Too bad. You might have the physical skills and the brains to go with it, but if you can't bring yourself to work with another human being, then what the hell are you doing here. 3) JAEGER TRAINING: Alright, you've made it. Report to the test range and get your asses in a Jaeger. INSTRUCTIONS → 1. Post with your character/canon/preferences. (Mod Note: Pacific Rim OCs are very much welcome, if not encouraged.) 2. Tag others. Tag a LOT. 3. Have FUN or we'll feed you to the kaiju. |

WELP here we go.
[They call her Princess.
It starts because she comes from a family with money. Not that Danae announced it herself, but rumors spread. People notice when you show up in clothes that don't look weather-worn and secondhand. They notice when you come from an area full of refugees, but your hair is still trimmed of all of its split ends. They notice when you show up looking all put together even with Kaiju attacks and the government not taking care of the common man like it should be.
Danae puts up with it. Nothing that matters comes easily, and she's not afraid of an uphill battle if it means earning the respect of her peers and making progress toward her goal. Everyone who joins the rangers wants to be a jaeger pilot, Danae included. If that means she has to go above and beyond to prove to everyone else in her unit that she's more than a pretty face and not getting by with her parents' money, then so be it. She works through the program like everyone else, training, sweating and at times bleeding alongside the others. Time comes when they stop seeing her as the girl who showed up looking like she'd stepped out of a cushy life, and start seeing her as a woman with natural skill and talent. Someone who lets her actions speak for her, rather than words, who doesn't boast, doesn't hold it over anyone who, well, as far as she's concerned has it coming. After all, not everyone can let go of that mental picture of how she showed up. After pressing their faces into the mud or down on the mats a few times, they get the hint.
By the end of boot camp and training, they still call her Princess, but without the antagonism they had before. She's Princess because she's good. Because she's the best in their group and in the end they may not all like her but they can respect that she's good, and maybe has the best chance of finding a drift-compatible pilot to fight the Kaiju with.
Once she's out of the program, she's one of ten shipped to the Shatterdome. By then, the breach has been closed. Everyone's heard about it by the time they arrive. Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon taken out by two Category IV Kaiju. Striker Eureka's pilots disobeying orders to try and save Cherno Alpha after Crimson Typhoon is destroyed, failing, and being rescued by none other than Gipsy Danger, piloted by a has-been and a rookie. The whole world hears about their last desperate strike against the breach, with Marshall Pentecost replacing Herc Hansen in Striker Eureka, taking the new pilots of Gipsy Danger with them. The Marshall has piloted solo before, and when it becomes clear that they wouldn't survive, forcibly ejects Chuck Hansen to the surface. Gipsy Danger goes into the breach, down into the throat. Mako is ejected. Then Raleigh, only after the jaeger is set to self-destruct.
With the breach closed, its as if the entire world breathes a huge sigh of relief. The War Clock is stopped. The people rejoice. People begin to heal and rebuild. There are others, however, who know that it's not so simple. They know that if the Kaiju could tear a hold between the two worlds, it's only a matter of time before they too rebuild their world and cause another breach.
Herc Hansen takes over for Pentecost in the end. Loose ends are tied up, and it isn't long before he starts making noises about preparations for the next invasion. They're not done with our world, he says. That they fought back only means the Kaiju will come back harder and faster and then they'll have more than their hounds to fight off.
The jaeger program stays in place, with no more talk of walls that won't protect the cities. The program gets the funding it needs, enough to keep things going. The day Danae shows up at the Shatterdome is the day Herc has brought back the surviving jaeger pilots from their shore-leave.
Danae is dressed in her civvies when she arrives. A knee length blue wool coat buttons closed over a pleated skirt and v-neck sweater. The ends of her cream-colored scarf tuck into the coat, matching the knee length knit socks that keeps her feet warm in her zip-up boots. She looks out of place in a military facility but for the standard issue duffel bag slung over her shoulder as she follows directions to her new bunk. Things dropped off, Danae exits the bunker. She shuts the heavy door and latches it closed, but when she turns away to head down the hallway, she finds herself bumping into someone very solid.]

They don't give up.
Chuck fights harder than he's ever fought in his life, and it's for a lot of reasons. He'd gone down in Striker expecting to die, knowing damn well it was a suicide mission at best and when Stacker had forcibly ejected him, he'd been given another chance -- to live, to do right by people, to be a better person.
He was still an arrogant asshole, an egotistical jerk with daddy issues but he was more tolerable these days, his relationship with his father after he'd been believed dead in slow - but steady - repair.
They will come back, he argues angrily, shouting at the UN as if they were some of his trainees, they came once, they'll come BACK and you'd have to be stupid not to see that--!
He's right. Herc's right. Everyone knows it, but they don't want to admit it. They're too terrified for them to be right but the sad truth of it is that the walls don't work, and trying to rely on something like that is stupid.
Most people don't know what goes on behind these closed doors -- to them, the program simply keeps moving forward, is reinstated and there are no hiccups.
Chuck and Herc Hansen know better. They get their funding, but it's barely enough. Jaeger reconstruction commences once more, Gipsy 2.0 in the works, along with revisions to Striker Eureka and Crimson Typhoon.
Chuck's in the Shatterdome, heading back to his bunk after a rare, successful meeting with the UN when someone bumps into him, sending him stumbling back. ]
What the--

Sorry about that, are you alright?
[The words pop out automatically, and as she looks at him to ascertain he's fine, she notices who he is. Chuck Hansen. Striker Eureka's pilot. The one who'd been part of Operation Pitfall. The one with all of those kaiju take-downs. He was one of the people they studied in the academy, along with his father, Stacker Pentecost, pretty much every successful pilot that had ever been in the cockpit of a jaeger.
Danae's eyes widen in recognition, but her head tilts to the side with almost immediate curiosity.]

[ He's trying to right himself properly because what the bloody fuck just happened, who was the rude drongo that just--
Oh. A rookie.
Well -- he's more prone to yell at them, but he's had a shitty day and she's not bring overly rude and he doesn't feel like being a dick.
At the moment. ]
Just watch where you're going, yeah?
[ Though she's looking at him with those wide eyes and he cocks his head back at her, straightening up. ]
...what?
no subject
You're him. Chuck Hansen. I was hoping to get a chance to meet some of the pilots.
[She reaches up to tuck some of her hair back from her face, and then sticks out her hand.]
Ranger Danae Elenia, just arrived.
no subject
Yeah, that's me.
[ He shakes her hand, brow furrowing a little. ]
Heard your name before. Welcome to the Shatterdome. [ It's about as polite as he gets, honestly. It's too bad Tendo isn't around, or Mako -- just to give her a tour. Chuck's a terrible tour guide. ]
no subject
Thanks, glad to be here.
[Her hand lingers a moment before she pulls it back, tucks it into the pocket of her jacket as she does the same with her other hand as well. And seeing his furrowed brow, she can't help but ask:]
Dare I ask what you've heard about me? Any juicy gossip or was it all training records and evals?
